PH asks UK and German COVID Vaccines for Nurses

The Philippines has asked the United Kingdom (UK) and Germany for COVID-19 Vaccines in exchange for the deployment of additional Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) Nurses.

UK and Germany has requested to be exempted from the 5,000 cap on the deployment of the OFW nurses implemented by the Philippines. The cap was placed in order to maximize manpower needed for health workers in the country.

It was reported that Philippines' Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Silvestre Bello III, in response, has requested from the United Kingdom and Germany for the COVID-19 vaccines in exchange of the deployment of nurses.

It was mentioned that the Philippines has 2 bilateral agreements with the United Kingdom signed in 2002 and 2003 which should be revisited and renewed for the welfare of Filipino workers.

The lifting or increase in the cap of deployment of nurses is still subject to the response of the United Kingdom and Germany. It has been estimated that 600,000 nurses would be deployed to the UK and Germany should the cap be increased or removed.

It was clarified in a Philippine Star article that the COVID vaccines are planned to be used on the OFW themselves.

The United Kingdom and Germany still as no response at the time of the writing of this article.
